With the success of Monsters Vs . Aliens at the box office this weekend , 3 - five hundred movies are now firmly back with mainstream consultation . But what other movie craze could be resurrected in a like way ?
Smell - O - Vision
Admittedly , lend back the power for the audience to smell a flick as well as see and get word it would have to be used slenderly ; I doubt that many people would give money to survive the oily odor of Michael Bay ’s Transformers 3 - viosterol or whatever . But now that 3 - D has proven itself to be reborn thanks to new technology , it ’s belike only a thing of clock time before some studio apartment goes back to the well that brought us Scent of Mystery and the “ Odorama ” translation of John Water ’s Polyester . After all , Japanese audience have get throughthe scent of Colin Farrellas recently as 2006 , so it ’s not as if the engineering is n’t there …

Percepto
It ’s the ultimate in hearing participation ; terrifying your viewer through physical means . William Castle created Percepto and made the one and only movie that used the gimmick , The Tingler . Unknowingly for the audience , the director had seats in theaters wire with small vibrator that , at a particular head in the movie , would make the seat shudder as if the person sitting in it was being attacked by the Tingler themselves . lawful , this theme may have limited use for horror movies today – not so much prickle being offer by today ’s monsters , after all – but I ’m certain some enterprising producers somewhere can think of exciting Modern uses for chairs that oscillate on cue .
( A completely wasted , personal , aside ; I was convinced that the UK theatre departure of the originalBattlestar Galacticahad some interchangeable whatchamacallit , when I was a kid ; I remember the seats oscillate when the viper were launched . year later on , someone pointed out a more obvious solution : That the sound of the launching made the rickety ass shake up because it was a icky theater of operations . passably grievous . )

Illusion - o
Another William Castle invention , “ Illusion - o ” used something interchangeable to oldschool 3 - five hundred engineering to exchange the movie you were view . looker who watched 13 Ghosts with the special glass ply could see ghosts that were otherwise unseeable to those watching without the glasses . I have to let in , I ’d love for someone to contribute this one back for modern consultation , because I have it off the idea of audiences in the same theatre being capable to experience entirely different picture for reasons other than they had read the original lifelike novel or not .
Multiple Endings

No , I do n’t mean in the Return of The King sense where you just want the pic to be over already ; I ’m let the cat out of the bag about actually have dissimilar termination available to an audience in a theater . Clue , excellently , used this trick when in theaters , provide three different end reckon on what theater you were watching in . William Castle ( again ! ) went one well with Mr. Sardonicus , which permit hearing members pick out whether or not a particular character croak , with different finish available depending on their conclusion . Considering all of the technology uncommitted now – not to mention the various “ alternating termination ” that appear on DVDs – I ca n’t believe that this one has n’t made it back to theaters yet . Give me a opportunity to see Kirk die at the remainder of May ’s Star Trek , dammit !
Silent Movies
It may seem counter - intuitive in the era of THX surroundsound and all of the other engineering that tries to convert your ears that you ’re actually in the middle of the movie and that Seth Rogen is in reality the right way behind you , but think about it for a second ; how many meter have you attend a movie that ’s had a decent patch , awesome especial effects and absolutely lousy dialogue or performances ? Silent movies would solve that trouble by removing the need for dialog altogether . You do n’t even ask to have a really silent movie ; you could keep in all the sound effects , and just withdraw the dialogue ( or push it onto subtitles or legend board at appropriate times ) . You ’re consider it ’s a unintelligent idea in good order now , but go and watch the start of Wall - E before coming back to accept that , just possibly , it might form after all . After all , what ’s the alternative for a more involve cinema experience ? build an even bigger IMAX screenland ?
