Google is n’t killing all tablet , but it will no longer be making its own tablets . It ’s a crying shame as Google ’s merging of Android and Chrome OS for last years abysmally reviewed Pixel Slate was perhapsthe perfect tablet OS .
Google has n’t publically announced any tablets since the Slate , but according toComputerworldit had at least two devices in development . That alter when , sooner this hebdomad , Google wiped tablets off its roadmap and conclude to focus on laptops for all next Chrome OS devices .
Rick Osterloh , who head twist at Google confirmed it on Twitter .

In a statement to Gizmodo , a Google rep also affirm it say , “ Chrome OS has grown in popularity across a broad range of build factors and we ’ll proceed to run with our ecosystem of partners on laptop computer and tablets . For Google ’s first - party hardware drive , we ’ll be focusing on Chrome oculus sinister laptops and will continue to support Pixel Slate . ”

In the meanwhile get ’s all moan and groan because dang it Google had the potential drop to craft something really awful . In 2015 Google launch thePixel Ctablet , a gorgeous piece of hardware hinder by an operating organisation that failed to smoothly move between pill and laptop computer mode . It seemed like it had nearly nailed the tablet , and with a picayune effort could hone it . Then it made thePixelbook , which retain to be the highwater mark for Chromebooks nearly two years after launching and despite a in high spirits price and older computer hardware . It also happen to be one of the good 2 - in-1 laptop computer around . It seemed a no brainer that if Google combined the lessons learned from the Pixelbook and Pixel C it could make a tab that would rival both the iPad and the Surface , andperhaps far exceed them .
Last year it launch the Pixel Slate whichshouldhave been that gimmick . I had issues with the slick glass open and the weird keyboard , but I loved the operating system , which nearly perfectly blended Chrome OS and Android OS , allowing you to use the pill like a utterly lovely small Chromebook when the keyboard was attached , and then convert in a fine media wasting disease tablet when it was detach .
unluckily , my experience was the exception , and many other reviewers base the OS buggy — particularly when moving from keyboard to touch - focus input and back again . Things started to look even worsewhen rumour abounded in March that Google was reorganize its hardware division .

While neither Osterloh or Google is saying why it ’s decided to stop make its own pad of paper one could look to the Pixel Slate ’s lukewarm reception as a reasonableness . specially as the more traditional Pixelbook is deem in such high esteem . When you reckon Google has made one of the best Chrome oxygen twist and one of the worst reviewed in high spirits - visibility ones it ’s promiscuous to get why it ’s focusing on laptops .
Something Computerworld stressed , and that was retell to me by Google , is that the company is n’t out of the Chrome oculus sinister or Android hardware business . Phones and laptop will still be made . Laptops with trace screens and 360 - degree hinge are still on the table . But stark pill , that can convert to a laptop computer with an extra keyboard showcase , are now steadfastly done .
This is fine news if you ’re eager for a raw Google - made Chromebook , but if you were hoping that the troupe was finally , really , get to nail the tablet you ’re out of fortune .
