Before Peter Jackson ’s pic , thevisual identityofLord of the Ringswas the territory of artists and animators . And few created a vision so iconic , and so loosely related to the literal books , asBarbara Remington .

Now , at the eld of 90 , the well - have it off illustrator has passed away . As reported bythe New York Times , the illustrator , who did softback pass over art for Tolkien ’s The Lord of the Rings books as well as The Hobbit , expire in recent January due to tit cancer . She was 90 years sure-enough .

As the story go , Remington created hand - eviscerate illustrations for the paperback versions of Tolkien ’s classics published by Ballantine Books . She did so , however , without having actual read the Word of God . And as the New York Times recount , quote old interviews with the creative person , Tolkien was not a big buff of them , request certain elements removed , like a lion that have on one of the covers . ( There are , it seems , no lions in Middle Earth . )

But it ’s easy to see why these caught on , and were later on collected and sold as a bill poster . They ’re adequate parts capricious and full of dread , not capturing very much at all about what Middle Earth must have really looked like but travail to a great extent into how they felt , even by accident . The slow change in color scheme from the first playscript to the third , the animal motifs that produce increasingly horrific , the twiddle ardour in the sky . It all feels like Middle Earth come to an end , even if it does n’t look anything like it .

Remington kick the bucket on to do illustrations for other rule book , but this work , as one of the first people to give Tolkien ’s Word graphics that suit them , is what stands out as her bequest . And what a marvellous legacy it is .
