Ever since Miles Morales took the role of Spider - Man over from Peter Parker , he ’s had to crusade his supervillain uncle , he ’s learn his entire universe get put down , and he ’s become one of the most spectacular heroes in Marvel ’s get-up-and-go for diversity . But now that he ’s joined the main Marvel universe of discourse inhis young series , author Brian Michael Bendis has even liberal plan for the Ultimate Spider - Man .

We spoke with the author about Miles ’ conception and phylogenesis , how he ’s been changed by Secret Wars , his relationship with Peter Parker , and the vast role he ’ll encounter inBendis ’ upcomingCivil War IIevent this summertime .

io9 : How has hush-hush Wars and the destruction of the Ultimate Universe and changed Miles — not just as a hero , but as a mortal ?
Bendis : That ’s absolutely the reason to buy the book as far as I ’m concerned . We had a pot of discussion about what Miles has witnessed , how it affected and changed him . He ’s a young man who has survived and positively affected a very big Marvel event . These events do exchange these fibre , their outlook and sometimes their condition quo almost altogether . Here ’s this unseasoned world who probably ca n’t even verbalise how it has vary him , but we can show you how it did . So when we open up the Bible — whether you ’ve read Secret Wars or not , it does n’t weigh — you’re gon na see a young man completely overwhelmed by all of the responsibility in front of him , having trouble equilibrate the elements of his life like most young multitude — and most people!—do . What we ’re go to discover is that it ’s extremely laborious to posture in class and be Miles Morales , when you know you the event you have on things as Spider - Man . Miles does n’t understand that without Miles , Spider - Man is a disaster .

Bendis : Well , Sara and I have been working together perpetually since [ Ultimate Spider - Man ] , just on other projects . We did Guardians of the Galaxy together , we did some XTC - Men together , she had to take some metre off for personal stuff , but we ’ve been always postulate . We were actually going to cook up some other undertaking before this idea came to us .
What was interesting about this , and a very unequalled experience — and I ’m talking for Sara , but I know this to be straight — I have it off she ’s vastly lofty of create Miles . That ’s what was very exciting . But what she did n’t get powerful away but beget as soon as she started drawing is “ Oh my god , I ’m coming back to this character who has completely evolved since his creation . ” When he was create , he was 13 years old . Now he ’s closer to 16 — that is literally the difference between military personnel and son , child and adult , it ’s a huge change . All the fictitious character have physically changed , and [ Sara ] has also evolve as an artist , so it ’s a very interesting experience for her to occur back to something she invented and yet have to , like , chance her way into it . I cogitate she does it amazingly well . For someone who ’s such a process junkie , and so into the creative experience , I just get applauding . “ Oh , this is exciting ! ” [ laughs ]
Anything that is a different originative experience , and though it may seem fully fluid to the people reading it , and it should . Behind the scenes , it was a very interesting puzzle for her to lick .
io9 : Like you said , in comic books it ’s a very rarified opportunity to see a character evolve like that . Most characters run to be relatively static .
Bendis : Or they ’re Bart Simpson and they never age !
io9 : Yeah ! Has that phylogenesis — both in terms of the character and his shoes in comics culture — bear upon how you look at Miles head into this new serial ?
Bendis : I do n’t know about other the great unwashed , but all of my psychic injury from that time period [ of being a teenager ] are still very refreshed . We had a lot of dialogue about this when we first put Miles on the scene , the decision to make him younger than Ultimate Peter Parker was very specific . What ’s scarier than being 15 take spider - powers ? Being 13 and having spider - powers .
Because I ’m Jewish , when we acquire up they say at 13 “ and now you ’re a piece , it ’s Bar Mitzvah time ! ” and I went [ Bendis adopts the squeakiest pitch he can ] “ I ’m a man ! ? , I ’m not a man ! ” It ’s a very weird matter to have put on someone , but it made me think about how , all over the populace , people are forced to develop up before they ’re quick , and I wanted the book to be about that . And we ’re going to get into that in an interesting way . Plus , I do n’t want to forget the fact that he ’s dressing up as Spider - Man . So not only is he rising to the challenge of being a superhero , he ’s part of a legacy , and that legacy has its own problems . It ’s got a set of good material , and a set of spoiled hooey . The spoilt stuff is going to take the var. of a lot of Spidey villains who ca n’t inevitably get their hands on Peter Parker anymore , so they ’re gon na be gun for Miles before Miles becomes as fully grown a job as Peter was to them .
io9 : Speaking of Peter , he ’s off being a CEO now in Amazing Spider - Man . How much of a role will he meet in the series ? What will his relationship with Miles be like ?
Bendis : Miles and this Peter Parker have met before in a project Sara and I did together call Spider - Men , which we ’re very proud of , and was a very emotional experience for us . I had a choice here from a taradiddle perspective : I could go for off on when we see Peter in this book , and dribble that out , or I could just get right to it . I always intend that when people are hold stuff and nonsense off , they conk , and I did n’t find like there was any motive to conk . In the eight months of Secret Wars , they have n’t figure each other . This is the first meter [ Peter and Miles ] have seen each other . I think this is going to be one of the top 10 reason people piece up the Holy Scripture , to line up out what ’s the deal with these two . You ’re gon na ascertain out what the hand is , and then we ’ll move forward .

Bendis : I hope they take from it what we intend , which is that they open it up and go “ Holy crap , Sara Pichelli is like , one of the unspoiled comic book artist on the major planet ! ” And then they bulge reading it and bring in that Miles is a fully formed character — in flux , but mold . I intend what mass respond to the most about Miles and his relationship with the world and his friends is the details , the small stuff that is hard to line in an audience like this .
When we do interviews we talk about multifariousness , we talk about his position , we talk about the Spider - Man legacy — and those are big things in the book of account , but the book is really a character piece , and a character slice is all in those detail . The response to that has been so overwhelmingly positive from honest-to-goodness fans and younger fans … I ca n’t recite you what a wonderful , heartwarming experience it is to learn from people about Miles every day . It ’s astonishing .
