The Kerbal Space Program is n’t so much a biz as it is a outer space - themed sandpile physics engines with lovely Kerbals to sacrifice to your scientific wonder . NASA is a fan of these expressive adventurer , and paired up with the game to make an asteroid geographic expedition extension .

Last year , NASA made an open invitation for the Kerbal Space Program to join in the Asteroid Redirect Mission :

Hey@KerbalSpaceP , interested in exploring an asteroid with us ? Take a feel at the architectural plan here!http://t.co / voBiQRhLJE

Of course the answer was a resonant YES ! For the past class , the Kerbal Space Program has been developing a plot faculty to mimic the genuine - life sentence NASA mission . The missionary station names and aim are the same for both groups : identify , airt , and research asteroids . TheNASA missionis still under development of exactly what the objective are and how to make it happen , but theKerbal missionis all laid out :

Identify : Detect , objective , distinguish and select the asteroid that you want to move
Redirect : Build a rocket ship and place course to intercept the moving asteroid , then pose your ship to airt the asteroid ’s trajectory
Research : Send your Kerbals on EVA ( extravehicular activity ) around the asteroids to impart experiments on the object and conglomerate valuable scientific datum as it ( and you ) hurtle through deep space

The module is stillunder development , with an expected release date “ soon . ” It will be a full - flight update for everyone who owns the game , not disjoined downloadable content . If you desire to try the plot , you’re able to get a full demo here , but note that the demonstration has n’t been updated to match the fresh for sale passing . check up on out themission FAQ here .
As for the risk asteroids place to the Kerbal homeworld Kerbin ? Well , they ’re a bit lucky than us :

Asteroids can most certainly crash into Kerbin , but even the large objects are n’t expectant enough to cause any significant damage . In fact , the Kerbals and that space syllabus of theirs have probably caused more damage to the planet than the asteroid ever could .
