The first event of Poe from BOOM ! Studios promises a Hellboy - esque supernatural mystery with everyone ’s favorite dyspeptic poet ( and his brother ) at the helm .
Edgar ’s married woman , Virginia , has died , and he ’s have difficulty apprehend . ( Fun fact : Virginia was his cousin and she was thirteen when they marry . He was twenty - seven . ) He ’s been snarf out of the mental hospital to visit her grave at night , and after he gets caught ( yet again ) , he take back to his room to find that ever - irritating raven . And a vision of a vernal girlfriend hanging herself . As much as we ’ve come to expect the former from Poe , the latter is somewhat jarring . Poe seems to agree with this ; he freaks out .
freak out out is apparently frown upon in genial hospitals , so his older brother , William , is call to take him aside . As he does so , William , a law John Constable , is called to the scene of a murder and is forced to bring his mentally unstable sidekick along . Luckily for the police force , however , Edgar goes all Sherlock Holmes on the crime scene , fall upon these thing call hint that the police on the scene had n’t thought to rule . ( Although , being Poe , I suppose it ’s more accurate to say that he went all Dupin on the criminal offence scene . )
These clues , fascinating thing that they are , point to a supernatural motive for the killing , implicating the victim as a practitioner of the “ Dark Arts . ” Turns out , this is the third in a cosmic string of such murders . And it ’s up to Edgar A. ( and his brother who thinks he ’s too buggy to be permit out alone ) to lick the case .
While perhaps it seems like the whole Poe / supernatural mystery matter has been fancy before , this still proves to be an pleasurable read , partly by letting Edgar share the spotlight with his more tier - headed chum , partly by taking more the tincture of one of Poe ’s mysteries than an natural action comic ( so to speak ) , and partially by giving the reader enough question to want to pick up the second issue . Why can Edgar see visions of calamity that have already chance ( such as the advert girl ) ? Does this have anything to do with the demise of his married woman ? Or with these murders ? And what do Roman coins have to do with anything ? And , perhaps most significantly , what ’s that giant scarlet - eyed being on the final dab page of the issue and will the Brothers Poe break away it ?
