Here ’s the thing about BBC America ’s Dirk Gently ’s Holistic Detective Agency : It is , by merit of its pacing , entertaining . But at the end of the episode , you ca n’t figure out why you observe it .
Dirk softly does n’t make you invested in any aspect of the show . That ’s part due to the fragmented story - narrate convention that Douglas Adams himself put into the original book , which , for some reason , is the only matter that this TV show has decide to keep from the novel . ( Do not gestate this show to have anything more than a pass resemblance to Adams ’ work . Down that route lie endless frustration . )
The fragmentation makes the central mystery story hard to get a hold on , so you just have to desire that everything is , as the show ’s marketing insists , connected . That by itself is n’t deadly to Dirk softly ; people watch shows with mystery that go unsolved all the time .

But the atomisation also means that viewers do n’t have a grip on most of the characters . They ’re just sort of weird props that impel the mess forth . And without either a clear plot or readable characterization , Dirk Gently is a very shallow show .
The characters we do jazz good are Dirk Gently himself ( Samuel Barnett ) and Todd Brotzman ( Elijah Wood ) . Dirk is , to put it mildly , deeply annoying . He is the nonpareil of the lanky , frenzied British man sticking his nose where it does n’t quite belong to in purchase order to solve a problem . This show want , so badly , to be some sort of hybridization between Doctor Who and Sherlock . Unfortunately , in the process , they ’ve give Dirk all of those characters ’ worst qualities and took away ones that make them watchable . In both Doctor Who and Sherlock , the statute title characters are know - it - alls with the tendency to run off at the mouth when the climate assume . They are often patronize and take out other people into their adventures , dun those people along the room .
Dirk does all that , but he has none of the government agency that allow those characters get away with it . He says he does n’t know anything , and you believe him . He does n’t seem competent or brilliant or have any sort of character that justify how pestiferous he is . There is exactly one moment where he seems like a real human being . And there are plenty of citizenry like that in the reality , but they are n’t people you require to pass time with .

Todd is the reference who is meant to be the audience surrogate , and he spend most of the first three instalment furious with Dirk . He is right to be . Dirk dive - dud into his life , insists that Todd is his assistant , and essentially brings ruination and misery to every view of Todd ’s macrocosm . And somehow Todd does n’t punch him constantly in the expression . Todd keeps trying to allow the story , and I kind of want to go with him .
Dirk lightly hurtles onwards with weird visuals , eccentric spouting non - sequiturs , and divertingly unmindful speeches . And it ’s those things that make the show unmiserable . The episodes are all fun , but they ’re also whole inessential . Which is n’t a good direction for a show that say “ Everything is connected ” to escape from out .
“ Absolutely no one has any idea what ’s choke on,”says Dirk at one point in time . He ’s more right than he lie with .
