Eureka may be no more , but there ’s still a long ton of stories left until we reach the oddment of the billet . In last night ’s episode , we get an entertaining true cat - and - black eye chase between two seriously unlikely characters … and it was kinda awe-inspiring .
The installment finds Allison totally under the remote control of the town ’s recur nemesis , Beverly Barlowe and her inscrutable , still kinda ill - defined anti - Eureka confederacy . So that he can institutionalise himself to the Astraeus Project , Fargo has turned control of Global Dynamics over to Allison , consecrate Beverly everything she needs to make her move against the town . She use some latterly administered Astraeus inoculation to send the intact town into a coma , and then she and her two henchmen go after all of Eureka ’s secrets .
Meanwhile , Jo has clean up Zoe Carter from the drome , who is none too pleased with the fact that Jo is dating her would - be beau Zane . gratefully , the comatose township interrupts their relationship play , and they are forced to take on Beverly all by themselves – all the while hold care not to harm Allison , whose body remains very much in the line of blast .
“ Omega young lady ” sense like an odd episode for a show like Eureka . While this half - time of year has see an increase in callbacks and denotation to preceding events , but this one take it to a whole other level . There ’s multiple discussions about the timeline shift , of course , while Zoe and Jo have to sort out their time - fractured relationship with Zane . There ’s also random callbacks to the Titan rover and the baby robot from season 4.0 , which I only scantily remembered was a matter . I distrust there were other source crammed in there , but those were the ones I note .
On a more canonical level , this is an installment built around a central conflict between Zoe Carter and Beverly Barlowe , who really are at best tertiary fictitious character . ( Zoe used to be a secondary character , I guess , but she has n’t been a regular since 2009 . ) Jordan Hinson and Debrah Farentino both do perfectly good jobs in their several office , but they ’re not really who we tune in to see . Other than Jo , none of the independent cast gets all that much to do , particularly after the twenty arcminute stigma – indeed , Fargo only gets a glorified cameo in this episode , and big guest stars Felicia Day and Wil Wheaton are nowhere to be seen .
Now , this is n’t inherently a sorry thing , but it sure as hell adds to the episode ’s arcdegree of difficulty . It ’s not just that we have n’t seen these characters in a while , it ’s that these two part have n’t even interacted since the first or second time of year . When Zoe recognizes that Allison is talking like her sometime shrink , she ’s pertain to episodes that broadcast between 2005 and 2007 . ( Or , at least , their new timeline equivalents , I reckon . ) That ’s kind of a daring thing to do for a show that has never really made a priority of long - running continuity . If last hebdomad ’s episode experience like a stylistic callback to previous seasons , then this episode is test to beg into the relationship and mythologies that underpinned the show ’s showtime .
So , the simple fact is that a Zoe / Beverly episode is n’t going to be immediately interesting as a Carter / Beverly sequence – or , if Eureka was feeling frisky , a Fargo / Beverly instalment . Because Beverly has always been such a resolutely mysterious character , I ’m not certain she really has any longstanding concrete relationships with any of the main cast – I mean , if you factor out out the whole “ controlling Allison ’s body ” thing , what precisely would Carter ’s boeuf with her be beyond sort of a general sense that she ’s the enemy ?
Of course , I presuppose now Carter ( and Allison , and everyone else ) has mess of intellect to be angry with Beverly . It ’s a chip of a ignominy the episode does n’t really adopt up on just how much Beverly has violated everyone by stealing Allison ’s consistence . That might be followed up on in late episodes , but I mistrust it wo n’t be a huge ingredient . On some degree , that ’s a thoughtfulness of who Jack is as the show ’s agonist . He but is n’t the eccentric to be wipe out by righteous rage or an all - consume drive for vengeance .
At the end of the twenty-four hours , he ’s just glad that Zoe and Allison are safe , and they can always worry about the big scarey terror some other clip . It ’s actually kind of a bully illusion that the show ’s leaning for procedural storytelling and soft resets is thread into the hero ’s characterization . If Jack is n’t the type to hold a grudge , why should we ? ( Of course , if the show feels like essay my psychoanalysis completely wrong and having Carter open up a can of whoop - ass on Beverly and the Consortium , I so wo n’t complain . )
All of this , I theorize , is a way of saying that while “ Z Girls ” is a very atypical installment , particularly in the context of season 4.5 , I still enjoyed it a whole portion and , overall , it exploit very well . The vanity of get Beverly actually physically seem in Eureka is a mo puzzling at first , but it finish up knead well , and first - clock time director Salli Richardson - Whitfield ( who plays Allison ) receive a couple cool instant out of the switch between Allison and Beverly .
Once Zoe and Jo get to Global Dynamics , we ’re pretty much in Die Hard territory , and there ’s a reason why that particular military action template has proven so pop . Speaking of Zoe and Jo , the sequence also does a decent job navigating the whole Zane great deal . I ’m really not a buff of this sort of plot telephone circuit , but it ’s properly well - executed here . Indeed , Eureka systematically shows a greater emotional due date when it comes to relationships than most other scientific discipline fiction shows . The scene where Zoe delays release Jo until she gets an apology is nicely handled , because Jo right – and , more outstandingly , successfully – point out they really do n’t have time to handle with this if they desire to kibosh Beverly from escaping .
All in all , “ Omega girl ” is a fun leaving from the scientific mysteries and lightheaded drollery that unremarkably contain Eureka sequence , as we instead head into the natural action movie / confederacy thriller territorial dominion . It ’s gracious to see the show continuing to try out so many different types of stories in time of year 4.5 , and so far , the solution have been very satisfying . The only interrogation now is in the follow - up , as we have to get back on data track with Astraeus , figure out just what Beverly is up to … and trade with any potential radioactive dust from Jack telling Zoe the truth about the timeline .
Finally , a nimble word aboutthe show ’s cancellation . I do n’t honestly have that much to say about it right now , considering we ’ve still grow 18 sequence to go between now and the end of 2012 – that ’s almost a after part of the integral outpouring of the show . While it ’s a bummer that a good show is going away , it ’s had a decent prospicient footrace , and I just hope there ’s clock time to conform time of year five ( which is presently nearing the end of production ) to wrap the show up properly . Anyway , until we get closer to the actual end , I think I ’m just going to bask what we ’ve got . And gratefully , there ’s an awful deal to delight in the here and now .
