Nimona , Noelle Stevenson ’s hilarious and heartfelt tale of a not - so - evil villain and his pushy , shapeshifting sidekick , is one of our pet current webcomics . Now that it has completed its online rill , a Nimona photographic print loudness is on its way , and we ’ve got the cover and an interview with Stevenson .
HarperCollins will be releasing Stevenson ’s Nimona graphic novel in May 2015 , so that we can consume the squash - up science fiction and phantasy risky venture as a complete tale . If you have n’t read Nimona yet ( and you really should ) , it conform to Lord Ballister Blackheart , a discredited former knight and vivid inventor with a grievance against his the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics and his one - time blood brother - in - arms Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin . But as Nimona helps Ballister with a new set of schemes , closed book are revealed from all side .
And here is Stevenson ’s cover version in all its glory :

We spoke with Stevenson , who is also one of the writers and Godhead of the comic Lumberjanes , about the foundation of Nimona , and why the indication experience will be different in mark :
Where did Nimona come from ?
It start as an grant for school . One of my illustration year gave us an duty assignment to create a character and then write one page on this character and turn it into these Quran where we would write a lilliputian bite of the story . And so I created this eccentric just off of the handcuff and after I turned in the assignment for that socio-economic class , I was like , “ I really like this character . I desire to do more with her . ” I start up to do these one - Thomas Nelson Page tale about her , which are the first Page of Nimona . Eventually , a class after I made those first pages , I decide , “ I really wish this . I want this to be a complete chronicle . ” So I end up putting it online as a webcomic and sample to take it through to the end , which I did .

But we ’ve also perplex Lord Ballister Blackheart , who is such a wonderful graphic symbol . At what point did you decide this would be his story ?
Well , I still feel like it ’s very much Nimona ’s story . It ’s just through his eyes . I cerebrate I wanted to do that because there is this secret around Nimona and who and what she is . And if it was from her period of panorama , that mystery would n’t be as much of a mystery . I ’ve always kind of gravitated toward quality who are a piece distant from the teller or the point - of - opinion characters , so that ’s kind of important to me , to set up a different quality who would be the point - of - view character for the story .
I also love the way that you play with archetypes . I mean , we see the anti - villain a lot in storys , but we also have Nimona as the buddy who immediately takes rush . Did that dynamic emerge as you were grow the story ?

I suppose it was just sort of what naturally happened . I was inspired by a few of my preferred brother and villain pairs from different stories that I was already a lover of . So there ’s a little bit of the Magneto / Mystique in there , but one of my biggest inspirations is really from the animated show Kim Possible , because the scoundrel and his sidekick , who , she ’s very unimpressed with everything he does , and is actually a lot smarter and more convinced ; she ’s unmotivated . So I was always really , really fond of that dynamic and there ’s a small number that went into that , the kind of upstart sidekick who ’s like , “ I have all these big ideas about how this is going to be and I just have to start somewhere . ”
We also have this wonderful brace of platonic love stories , between Ballister and Nimona and between Ballister and Goldenloin .
This was n’t my purpose when pop out the account , granted , but as the fib pass away on I definitely actualize that Ballister and Goldenloin ’s relationship had been romantic in the past . And it ’s more of my personal approach to that is that I still gravitate more towards warm friendship and connection that are n’t exactly amorous or intimate in nature and that ’s always more interesting to me . So perchance two characters who have dated in the past times and what their relationship is now and endeavor to rebuild trust between two people when there ’s so many obstacle in the way . So I think it ’s just the means I border on strong relationships of any nature , whether wild-eyed or platonic . Similar thing interest me about those relationship , so they tend to study as similar , which I consider confuses some hoi polloi who are used to more straightforward romance stories . People are like , “ Are Nimona and Ballister romantic ? ” And I ’m like , “ No ! Of course not . ” “ Well are Ballister and Goldenloin in a human relationship ? ” And I ’m like , “ Yeah , okay . ”

What made you make up one’s mind to set your storey in this combined science fiction and fantasy world ?
That all move back to that original designation . It was all really off the cuff , spry brainstorming , because I call up we had half an hour to get along up with these character . And I was like , “ I ’m going to have this character who ’s a shapeshifter — people love shapeshifters . ” And I believe part of the concept was that I was making a joke with my ally that it ’s conk to be steampunk , but instead of Victorian , it ’s going to be medieval . So it ’s not steampunk ; it ’s monkpunk . And that was a uproarious joke at the sentence . It bend into this biting midge , chainmail - clad mortal and then a robot - fortify knight scoundrel . Yeah , so it begin out as a throwaway laugh to the individual sit next to me in category , but it ended up really inform the world of the comic . You bonk what ? horse are awesome . robot are awing . Why do n’t we have both ? I ca n’t claim that was especially consider out .
Do you feel like the story is going to read very differently in print , with people reading it as a single - serve narration rather than living with it for months and months ?

Oh yeah , I hope so . Yes , it ’s always go feel a little unlike depend on the metre shape that it ’s consumed over . So there certain things when you ’re doing a webcomic , “ Bear with me on this page . I know it ’s not what you want to see right now , but it ’s go to be important . It ’s important for this to be the whole floor . ” And hopefully when people go back and read it as one ruined product , those choices will be more clear and everything will work together . I think also a few mass have been confused that I did n’t exactly resolve a lot of the questions that were set up in the comedian , and the thing is I kind of did do them ; it ’s just kind of hidden in prognosticate . If you were to sit down and study it all at once alternatively of , “ This varlet is referencing another page that I place seven months ago”—then it ’s harder to get that callback . So I call up it will be easier to pick up on things when you ’re reading it as one cohesive unit .
One thing I really I want to hump is , when are we getting a Nimona renovate film ?
I would love that ! And I ’m work on an revivify show right now , Wander Over Yonder with the Disney Channel . So that ’s been really exciting . It ’s a whole newfangled kingdom for me , but I ’m both delirious for the potential of any kind of animation thing that Nimona could potentially be and it also makes me felicitous that Nimona exists in its current form . Things do run to get convert ; thing do go through horizontal surface of bureaucratism before they can get made . And they do end up very different . So I think having it in this book and having it be done and end up in this thing that exists . It ’s like , “ It ’s okay if you change it , because it already exists the mode I imagined it . You ca n’t transfer that . ”
