Whena film is a huge succeeder , we often imagine studios pressure film producer to be it up . “ Get the sequel out fast , ” is the prevailing thought . And while sometimes that happens withvarying academic degree of success , George Millertold io9 he did n’t feelany pressure sensation to accompany up Mad Max : Fury Road after that film ’s achiever . He just kind of had to , deep in his bones . And soFuriosa : A Mad Max Sagawas born .
As most masses know , the first seeds of Furiosa camein the development of Fury Road . To give the actor backgrounds for their fiber , Miller developed elaborate backstories for each . And in the case of Furiosa , that morphed into a whole freestanding screenplay . One that the writer - director very much liked . “ The whole possibility was that if Fury Road got enough grip we ’d at some distributor point , fare and make this film , ” Miller told io9 .
But that was around 2015 . It ’s currently , spoiler alert , 2024 . So what was the film ’s journey in between ? Well , Miller made3000 Years of Longingand Warner Bros. experience multiple changes in not just ownership but direction of its film studio apartment .

“ I know [ Furiosa ] would pass at one stop , ” Miller aver . “ You ’re drawn to narration first . You sense a gravitational pull to write up or a obsession to narrate a story . I ’m a habitual fibber . I set out as a little kid and now it ’s just part of how I make for and how I am . The stories compete in your head , almost , in a Darwinian way . And some of them , you ’re saying , ‘ You know , this is the one that I most require to tell at this pointedness . ’ And that ’s just how it happens . And luckily , the planets aligned , and we were able to sort of do it . ”
Miller prognosticate the current Warner Bros. film group , lead by Michael De Luca and Pamela Adby , “ a very , very picture show - friendly chemical group of mass ” and heaps praise on the family relationship . “ [ They ’re ] masses who understand the human relationship between a studio and filmmaker is not adversary , it has to be collaborative , ” Miller said . “ And it ’s not just in their words , it ’s by their actions . And we benefit from that immensely in the making of this film . Unlike thewell - document troubles we had on Fury Road . ”
So , by hell or mellow water , Furiosa was made . George Miller had to . And this weekend , he ’s giving it to us .
