Vizio , the champ of cheap , pretty damn good video , is making the ( inevitable ) maraud into Tabletania . Their snazzily named Vizio Tablet jibes with the balance of their electronic card : modestly price , decent featured , above - norm playing . And we palpate it up .

The Vizio Tablet is n’t run short to fellate you away with specification . In fact , it ’s not run to blow you at all . It ’s fill with the sand of a phone , more or less : a 1 Ghz CPU of unverified cradle , 512 megabyte of RAM , and 4 GB of national store ( plus SD card way for an extra 32 ) . This is n’t a goliath by any var. factor ’s criterion .

And yet , the 8 - inch slab felt nice . The software was unfinished — so view the above with that in mind — but even so , the screen met my gold measure of not being horribly unresponsive , which is enough to make me exile any touch - based machine to the barren of hell without a 2d thought . The Tablet was glitchy , yes — but that ’s something Vizio can ( and we trust will ) knock out before it hits entrepot next month . But the implicit in hardware was all right . Sturdy . Grippy . meaty without tiring my fragile radiocarpal joint . It ’s not brush aluminum , mahogany and kevlar , but it does n’t feel like it was dropped out of a Taiwanese gum egg motorcar like most other budget tab .

moving picture playback on the 1024×768 presentation was suave and warm to load , Google Maps was perky , and the Gingerbread under Vizio ’s mostly - attractive custom skin was finely functional , when it was n’t eruct up beta gas .

The Vizio Tablet has some gracious touches , like an extra side speaker to see to it belongings stereoscopic photograph strait from both landscape painting and portrait grips , and — far more importantly — an IR emitter , which get the twist babble to your TV ( and accompanying AV gear mechanism ) , potentially commit it on a home theater pedestal .

And that ’s probably the coolest part of the Vizio Tablet . Both aesthetically and , to a important extent , functionally , it mirror the app rooms Vizio ’s sticking on their TVs , mean it ’s an affordable , eloquent room to jump-start into the res publica of TELEVISIONS THAT RUN APPS . Vizio is n’t Samsung or Panasonic , but having seen goggle box app offering of the latter two , Vizio is the first company that actually appears to give a shit about the package its telly run , and the Tablet is , in principle , positioned to take awesome advantage of that .

It ’s not a glorified remote control . It ’s a meek Android pad that could also make using your home theater of operations more enjoyable , supply the software package that ’s deliver to ledge is milled . And for $ 350 , it ’s an entire non - threatening first tablet on its own — ride out tune up for us to run it through Tablet Boot Camp once the fully ruined package is on our desks . [ Vizio ]
