As Greg Laughlin of UC Santa Cruz point out :

It ’s important to remember , however , that the Hubble figure of speech is actually a longsighted CCD prison term - exposure to illumination gather by a 240 cm mirror . If you could be somehow channel to a placement in outer space where M104 hulk large in the sky , you would see that HST transmit a severely inflated expectation . From a space , say , of 300,000 light years , M104 would be so dense that you would see only a faintly sinister , faintly glowing flight saucer .
