We ’ve been take care a whole bunch ofhungrylittlealternative service providerstrying to cut into the vainglorious boys with humbled , low prices , but how about innocent ? FreedomPop , the ethnic music behind hotspot and routers that come in with liberal data , just announced the first free wireless service plan . No , really . Free minute of arc , destitute texts , and gratuitous information . For free . Freeeee .

People who sign up up for the young service will receive 200 barren anytime minutes ( FreedomPop to FreedomPop calls are limitless ) , 500 MiB of liberal 4 G datum , and outright free text every month . If they go over , users can pluck up unlimited minutes for any give calendar month for $ 10 . datum ’s just slightly more complicated : it ’s $ .02 per extra megabit ( $ 20 per GB ) if the user has a detached programme , or $ .01 per additional mebibyte if the user opts for a $ 18 for 2 Gi or a $ 29 for 4 GB monthly plan .

Of course there are a duet of catches . To get on FreedomPop ’s design , you ’ll have to purchase a extra ( doubtlessly unsubsidized ) earpiece loaded with custom O - level software up front . And that ’s bound to cost you a few hundred dollars . FreedomPop says the stable will let in “ select , popular Android French telephone , ” but if other , similar MVNOs are any indication , this probably meansaging LG devices(like the trustworthy Optimus ) . We ’re hoping against hope for something a little more enticing than that .
Then of course there ’s the connection . FreedomPop will be hopping on Sprint ’s fledgling LTE connection eventually , but until then its WiMax and CDMA , andWiMax is preeeeeeeeetty spotty . CDMA , on the other hand , is sluggish but ubiquitous .
The table service has only just been announced and wo n’t actually but up and be given until sometime later this summer , but users can contract up for other access onFreedomPop ’s website . Discount supplier have yet to really unseat major postman so far , but sliding that monthly cost all the manner down to gratis is middling insane . Here ’s to hoping there ’s no bad news hiding in the details , because this looks like it could be one blaze of a shakeup .
