“The truth is, Meghan and Joy like each other and get along more often than not — they just don’t agree on their politics,” the industry source says.

“But when [co-host] Whoopi [Goldberg] isn’t there, things get a little off the rails,” the insider adds. “They all respect her and she keeps things on track.”

While the women are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, they’re not afraid to share their opinions — and argue it out in front of audiences.

On Monday’s episode of the talk show, the two women — who have a habit of butting heads on the program — found themselves at odds while discussingPresident Donald Trump‘s tweet about Senator Amy Klobuchar.

As Behar, 76, introduced the topic, McCain, 34, added, “This is real.”

“Can I get through this, please?” Behar replied.

“Can I say something now?” she asked. “Is that okay, Joy? Do I have permission to speak now on Amy Klobuchar? We’re all good?”

“No, if you’re going to have a hissy fit, we can’t continue,” she said as the studio audience laughed. McCain crossed her arms and shook her head. She did not speak for the rest of the segment.

The co-workers last had an especiallytense exchangeduring aGeorge H.W. Bushtribute on the show in December. The twosparredwhen their discussion about the late president, whodiedDec. 1 at the age of 94, turned political.

After praising Bush’s environmental efforts while in office, Behar tore into PresidentDonald Trump. Things quickly escalated when McCain asked that the conversation be redirected back to honoring Bush.

However, a source later told PEOPLE the two women were “totally fine” following the exchange.

“They had a disagreement on-air, which is totally expected in that job,” the source said. “But they are both professionals. They seemed completely fine afterward.”
