Miley CyrusandLiam Hemsworthhave been together nearly a decade, but it waslosing their shared home in Malibuthat finally pushed them to the altar.
The “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” singer got candidin a newVanity Fairinterview, and explained that she and Hemsworth formed a deeper bond after theirhouse burned downin November in the Woolsey Fire.
“When you experience what we experienced together with someone, it is like glue,” she said, adding that their marriage grew from the trauma. “You’re the only two people in the world who can understand.”
The stars, who were first engaged in 2012,tied the knotin December after nearly a decade of makeups and breakups following their first meeting on the set of 2010’sThe Last Song.
Cyrus, 26, also wrote apersonal memofor the outlet in which she described the couple’s feelings upon losing many items of sentimental value – and why rebuilding a house just wouldn’t be the same.
“Liam and I have also found a new bond underneath all that rubble. Going through a natural disaster, the grief you experience is really unlike any other loss. No more, just different,” she wrote. “In our position it feels or looks like everything is replaceable and you can start again, but you can’t buy spirit. Our place wasn’t filled with expensive, meaningless s—, but art.”

TheHannah Montanaalum was in South Africa filmingBlack Mirrorwhen the flames engulfed their home, but Hemsworth, 29, sprang into action and rescued the couple’s many pets.
TheIsn’t It Romanticactor bought the house while he and Cyrus were broken up, and arrived on moving day to a surprise.
“The old owners are cleaning out the garage and getting out all these plaques and s— with my face on it. Liam showed up and was like, ‘What the f—?” Cyrus recalled to the outlet.
Once the couple rekindled their romance, Cyrus moved in, bringing with her music on hard drives and laptops that were destroyed the fire.
“I’ll never be happy that all those memories and pictures and things that I’ve loved are gone,” she said. “But to have an experience like this — I find myself feeling more connected to being human again.”
Cyrus previously raved over her love for Hemsworth and his heroics in saving their animals on SiriusXM’sHoward Stern Showin November.
“Liam, I’ve never loved him more for this… He was so incredible — he got all the animals out in his truck. He put two pigs in crates, which I tell you is so hard,” she said. “He knew I was very, very grateful. He got a lot of action for saving the animals.”
The only thing left standing when the flames subsided were concrete letters spelling out “LOVE,” which Hemsworthshared to his Instagrampage.
“That’s literally and physically all that’s left, so I felt that that was really poetic,” she said onOn Air with Ryan Seacrestin December. “You can always rebuild a physical structure, but that love that can’t be destroyed is always there and always stays strong. That’s been something that gave me a lot of light at a dark time.”
