A " smile " vent has run low viral .
Hawaii’sKilauea volcanohas been actively erupting since 1983 , and it ’s one of the most active volcano in the human race , fit in to the U.S. Geological Survey ( USGS ) . But the volcano receive more care recently when thevolcano ’s lavaformed what looks like a smiley face .
The lava in Kilauea’s crater formed what looks like a smiley face.
The smiley font appeared in a lava lake volcanic crater on the west flank of Pu’u ' O’o , on Kilauea ’s East Rift Zone , according to Janet Babb , a geologist with the USGS ' Hawaiian Volcano Observatory . [ Explosive Images : Hawaii ’s Kilauea take fire for 30 year ]
Pu’u ' O’o also of late made headline when thelava flow hand the oceanfor the first time in three class .
While it may seem like Kilauea was smiling for the photographic camera , the " face " has a more scientific account : The shining spot and incandescent line that create the face shape were produced by normalvolcanic activeness .
As a lava lake circulates , lavaupwelling and downwellingwill occur on opposite face of the lake , according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory . This often results in a spattering of molten lava , which creates bright spot on the dark - colored , semi - strong lake surface . Circulation can also cause section of the surface to pull apart , let out the lava beneath and creating lines .
By chance , these process occurred in a pattern that created the smile image , Babb said .
" The Pu’u ' O’o lava lake just happened to raise two spattering sources ( shiny acid ) that have been interpreted as ' eyes ' and an incandescent line that has been interpreted as a ' mouth ' — with the two lake Earth’s surface feature located relative to each other to produce the iconic symbol of a smiley face , " Babb told Live Science .
The spattering and cracking also happened to occur as Mick Kalber , of a helicopter term of enlistment company called Paradise Helicopters , was flying overhead , where he was able to capture the volcano ’s " smile . "
