Christina Aguileraand her partner Matthew Rutler are in no rush to get to the altar — they’ve been engaged since 2014.
Aguilera and Rutler met when they were both working on the 2010 movieBurlesque. She starred as the lead in the musical drama while he worked as a production assistant.
In December 2010, two months after Aguilera filed for divorce from her ex-husband, music producer Jordan Bratman, she spoke to PEOPLE about getting to know Rutler. When asked if she was in love, the Grammy-winning singer responded, “There’s a love there, yes. I’m having fun, I’m dating and it’s something I haven’t had in a really long time.”
The formerVoicecoach added that she still “wholeheartedly” believed in love and marriage. “I know one day I’ll be able to feel that again for someone,” Aguilera said. “That idea will never die.”
Now, over a decade later, Rutler has proved to be Aguilera’s lasting love. In addition to confirming their commitment through their engagement, the two also welcomed a child, daughterSummer Rain Rutler, in 2014.

They met while working together

Aguilera and Rutler crossed paths while filmingBurlesquein November 2009. The following year, the “Genie in a Bottle” vocalist told PEOPLE that they started dating after she filed for divorce from Bratman that October.
“Matthew is a special person. We had a really strong friendship on the movie," she said about the start of their relationship. “He’s the kind of person you could spend hours on the phone talking to and all of a sudden it’s daylight.”
Still, Aguilera shared that she was pacing herself. “I’m not trying to jump into anything. I just left a five-year marriage. I’m taking it slow and trying to be happy,” she added.
Rutler, a New Jersey native, worked as a production assistant regularly from around 2009 to 2011. Other movies he worked on includeThe Proposal(2009),The Town(2010),The Social Network(2010) andSomething Borrowed(2011).
According toVariety, he started out as a guitarist with the Nate Mott Band.
They got engaged in 2014

A few years after they began dating, Aguilera and Rutler got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2014.
Ina post on X(formerly Twitter), Aguilera posted a photo of herself and Rutler holding hands in front of a beach with her engagement ring on display.
She wrote alongside the picture, “He asked and I said……”
A source told PEOPLE at the time, “They’re very much in love and are really excited to take this next step!”
Amid their celebration, Aguilera was also about three months pregnant with their first child together.
They welcomed a daughter in 2014

Six months after announcing their engagement, Aguilera and Rutler welcomed Summer Rain on Aug. 16, 2014.
“So proud to welcome our beautiful daughter Summer Rain Rutler into the world,” she wroteon X.
Summer is Aguilera’s second child. She also has a son, Max Liron Bratman, born in January 2008, with her ex-husband.
They’re not in a rush to get married

Aguilera and Rutler appear to be taking their time planning their wedding and walking down the aisle. Since his romantic proposal in 2014, they haven’t exchanged vows, but not feeling pressured to tie the knot was something that Aguilera opened up about back in 2015.

Rutler no longer works as a production assistant; these days, he’s an executive for MasterClass.
In 2016, he was named the senior vice president of talent and business development — a role he still holds, according to hisLinkedIn.

In 2013, Rutler starred in Aguilera’s music video for her song “Let There Be Love.”
The video features behind-the-scenes footage of the singer getting her makeup done and her backup dancers rehearsing as well as people holding signs painted with positive messages. In a clip, Aguilera and Rutler share a sweet moment while sitting at a table and later dance together at a party.
Aguilera opened up about their sex life

Aguilera revealed one aspect of her relationship with Rutler when she appeared on the podcastCall Her Daddyin April 2023. While promoting her sexual wellness brand Playground, the singer talked about her favorite sex positions and the wildest places she’s had sex.
“There’s the studio soundboard. I’ve been bent over there a couple times.It’s fun,” she told hostAlex Cooper. “A plane can be fun, we’ve definitely hid some things under the blankets. … I can’t believe we didn’t get caught so many times in so many situations.”

For instance, on Valentine’s Day in 2021 — which was also the seventh anniversary of their engagement — Rutler shared a video onInstagramof a helicopter ride they took for her birthday that past December.
“What a ride it’s been!” he wrote in the caption. “Andwe’re just getting started. You still make me crush. Every. Single. Day. Happy Valentine’s Day my love. 😍😘❤️.”
